LOOP Technology at UND

Learning about the Hearing Loop technology and incorporating it into the Memorial Union’s ballroom and the nearby multipurpose room was a first for our WTW team. We’re excited to get a post-occupancy evaluation from the users this fall and look forward to sharing this unobtrusive option with future clients looking to improve the accessibility of their spaces beyond code minimums.

This can also be a good retrofit option, depending on floor finish and technology capacity in your building.

WTW’s Associate Principal, Maria Kyriacopoulos dives into the different rating systems to help you choose what’s right for your next project.

UND Construction Progress

Construction on the new Memorial Union at the  University of North Dakota is only a couple of months away from substantial completion. The arches at the entrances have come together nicely, and you can see the great community space forming at the social stair. We can’t wait to see these spaces used by students this fall!

75 Hopper Place Construction

Check out the latest construction photo of 75 Hopper Place. The six-story, 186,000 square foot office building fronts Hopper Plaza and is the centerpiece of the Phase II 3 Crossings development.

As part of the developments sustainability initiative, the plaza sits above the underground garage, creating a terraced green space with integral seating for employees, residents, and visitors in the surrounding buildings.

The design embraces the neighborhood’s historic past as a market district and blends it with today’s lifestyles and the high-tech commitment to advance technology in the City.

Q&A with WELL Accredited Professional, Jacque Link

WTW’s Senior Interior Designer, Jacque Link, sees the benefits of WELL certified spaces, advocates the importance of WELL’s concepts to clients, and implements its strategies into her everyday life.

What does being a WELL ACCREDITED Professional mean to you?

JL: Becoming a WELL AP to me, has solidified my drive to represent the building occupants through design. I strive to be a champion for, and representative of “the Ground Troops”, whether that is in a client’s building or our own office. WELL is about more than just a company’s bottom line or a school budget. It’s about the wellness of the people that make the company and school possible, from the students and facilities staff all the way up to the Presidents.

Passive House – it’s more affordable than you think

Article by: Brian DiPietro, Associate Principal, WTW Architects

While visiting a construction site of a net-zero project WTW designed last winter, I witnessed something I never thought possible.  I wanted to share this experience of an obvious but overlooked reason for why anyone might want to build a Passive House building.

Rendering of Hilltop Hall, SUNY Polytechnic Utica

I could try and sell you on how you should build a passive house building to help save the planet and make a better world for our children, but I’ve been around long enough to know project budgets more often than not, rule. Instead, I’m going to tell you why it doesn’t cost as much as you’re probably expecting; if you factor in the life cycle costs (including operations and maintenance) as part of your initial budget, it will save you money.

FIRST, THE NORM.

Typically in the winter, a construction site for a project like this (a four-story residence hall, about 20,000 SF per floor), will utilize at least one torpedo heater at the center of each floor, if not two, and large blower fans pushing the heat throughout the building.  This is done to keep the inside temperature of the building above 50 degrees to avoid drywall cracking and allow the contractors to continue work in cold weather.

Exciting News!

We are pleased to announce that Larry Payne has been named the President of WTW, and will also assume the role of CEO upon Rich DeYoung’s well-deserved retirement as of February 28, 2021.

Rich DeYoung, who served as President & CEO since 2003, continually challenged and inspired the firm to push the boundaries of design and creative solutions in a highly collaborative process. During DeYoung’s tenure he played a critical role in helping the firm adapt to significant shifts in design and construction environments. In the process, he solidified WTW as a thought leader in higher education, multi-family housing, and corporate markets.

Prior to being named Chief Executive Officer, DeYoung served on the management team as a Principal where he worked on a variety of projects across multiple markets. He was elevated to Fellow by the American Institute of Architects (2013) and has been recognized across the United States for design excellence . With over 44 years of experience at WTW, his architectural leadership has had a positive impact on over 1,000 projects in 40 states.

“Rich has been a fantastic mentor throughout my entire career at WTW. I’m humbled, excited, and ready to take on this new role; and look forward to continuing to foster the high level of design and service clients expect from WTW,” said Payne.

Larry started his career with multiple internships at WTW between 1986 and 1988 and joined WTW full-time in 1989. He will continue to cultivate inspiring designs and exceptional service for clients moving forward in his new role.

”It is gratifying to step down knowing that an outstanding team of professionals, led by Larry, will continue the exceptional design and commitment to client service that defines WTW,” DeYoung reported.

WTW Senior Principal Warren Bulseco will now serve as Senior Vice President. Warren started with WTW as an intern architect in 1991. Associate Principals, Amy Maceyko, E. Maria Kyriacopoulos, and Brian DiPietro will continue to expand their leadership, design, and management roles in the firm.

“We are excited for the opportunity to continue WTW’s legacy of exceptional service through collaborative interaction among our staff and clients,” said Warren Bulseco.

Renovate or Replace? When the College Union Falls Short of Student Needs

Article by: Amy Maceyko, Associate Principal, WTW Architects

It is a common refrain when student life professionals visit our booth at ACUI conferences – “Our building hasn’t had a major renovation in thirty (…or forty) years. Where do we begin? Do we renovate and add on, or should we consider replacement?”

Rendering of the new Memorial Union at the University of North Dakota.

This is the right place to begin, no matter why your union is falling short. Perhaps the building was originally built too small and planned future additions never came to fruition. Or maybe enrollment increases have outpaced the building size by leaps and bounds. Or possibly the size of the building is right, but the systems are outdated and insufficient for current student needs.

Whatever the reason, good direction can be determined by considering a number of factors and their relative costs. Some of this information will be at your fingertips, and other data may require consultation with campus facilities and maintenance staff or the university architect.

Memorial Union construction progress at University of North Dakota

Memorial Union Project September Progress Photos

Large student union projects have unique construction challenges that require a well-orchestrated approach, and good communication between the construction and design teams. A college union is inherently open and transparent, and many of the spaces flow from one to the next.

The Memorial Union at the University of North Dakota has passed the halfway point in construction and there are 150+ craftspeople working on the project daily. In the photo of the Grand Staircase in the main lounge, you can see a long dust barrier behind the stair. All of the spaces north of the barrier are ready for paint and equipment. This large atrium space still being fireproofed is open to three floors of the building, so messy work must be contained.

McGough is the Construction Manager for UND, and they have done a great job of managing this complex project. Plans for staging of the work began during design, and has been continually refined to respond to winter weather, Covid, and other unforeseen conditions over the past 15 months. Many thanks to our partners at JLG Architects and McGough for a smooth construction process thus far.

The Collaboration Commons & Courtyard Infill at Penn State

Daydreaming about collaborating in groups? We are too…

The Collaboration Commons & Courtyard Infill project located within the Pattee and Paterno Libraries at The Pennsylvania State University included a series of phased interior renovations totaling approximately 69,500 SF.

Combined with the Tombros & McWhirter Knowledge Commons which opened in 2013, the renovation builds upon what is the main hub for students to gather, exchange ideas, and utilize numerous emergent and innovative technologies in a variety of specialized, yet flexible spaces outfitted with ‘smart’ furniture that not only encourages, but facilitates collaboration within both Libraries.

The Project continues to afford students the opportunity to transform raw information into usable knowledge.

Led by WTW principals Tom Wiley and Paul Knell, WTW is excited to be a partner in the design of this creative community based organization; just another reason to be Pittsburgh proud!
